How big the table should be
Plan about 600 mm of table edge per person, then check the room. These are common starting points; your room decides the final size.
Common sizes
- 4 seats: round, about 1000–1200 mm across
- 6 seats: about 1800 × 900 mm
- 8 seats: about 2400 × 1200 mm
- 10–12 seats: about 3000–3600 × 1200 mm
Room clearance
- About 1000–1200 mm from the table edge to the wall, so chairs can push back
- More at the end where people walk past
- Space for a screen or whiteboard wall
- Door swing and window positions
Big boardrooms
- Long tables are made in sections and joined on site
- Check lift and staircase sizes before choosing one-piece tops
- U-shape or hollow-square layouts for training and video calls
- Leave one end open facing the screen
Shapes
Which shape suits the room
Rectangular
- Most seats for the floor area
- Easiest to extend in sections
- Suits most meeting rooms
Boat, barrel or oval
- Wider in the middle, narrower at the ends
- Everyone can see each other and the screen
- A common choice for boardrooms
Round & square
- 4–6 people, no head of the table
- Good for discussion corners and cabins
- Pedestal or four-leg bases
How it's built
What separates one conference table quote from another
Two quotes for 'an 8-seater conference table' can be for very different tables. These are the lines to compare.
Top
- Pre-laminated board: most economical
- MDF or plywood with laminate: stiffer, better edges
- Veneer with polish for boardrooms
- Top thickness and edge-banding on exposed edges
Base & frame
- Powder-coated MS (mild steel) frames in a range of leg designs
- Panel or wooden bases for a solid look
- Frame strength over long spans
- Levelling feet for uneven floors
Power & AV
- Flip-up power and data boxes set into the top
- Cable tray under the top, riser down to the floor box
- Cut-outs for HDMI and video-conference cables
- Floor box position matched to the table

FAQ
Common questions
What size conference table do I need for 8 people?
A rectangular table of about 2400 × 1200 mm seats eight comfortably, three a side and one at each end. You also need about 1000–1200 mm between the table edge and the walls so chairs can push back. Send your room size and we'll check it fits.
How much space do I need around a conference table?
Allow about 1000–1200 mm from the table edge to the wall on the sides where people sit, and a little more where people walk behind the chairs. In a tight room, a narrower table or a round one often works better than squeezing in more seats.
Which material is best for an office conference table?
Laminated board is the usual choice for meeting rooms: it's economical and resists scratches and stains. Veneer with a polish finish looks richer and suits boardrooms but needs more care. Compare the top thickness, the edge-banding and the frame, not just the finish.
Can the table have power and data built in?
Yes. Most conference tables can take flip-up power and data boxes set into the top, with a cable tray underneath and a riser down to a floor box. Tell us how many sockets, data points and HDMI connections you need and where the floor box is.
Can you get a large boardroom table that fits through our lift?
Yes. Long tables are usually made in sections that join on site with matching tops and a continuous cable tray. Send your lift and staircase sizes with your requirement so the sections are made to fit.
Do you supply the chairs as well?
Yes, if you want them. Add the number and type of chairs to your requirement and we'll quote tables and chairs together, or leave them out and we'll quote the tables alone.
Do you manufacture conference tables yourselves?
No. FurnishDesk is a procurement desk. We source from manufacturers that make conference tables to order, compare their quotes and manage the order for you.
